City opens doors for Health interns

The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Health Unit has welcomed new community service EH interns on board.

The eight new EH practitioners (EHPs) come from across the country and have been placed at Environmental Health offices across the eight sub-districts in the metro.

'Annually the City employs the Community Service EHPs for a period of a year, providing them with extensive knowledge and exposure to the field of Environmental Health.  These candidates have completed their Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health from different institutions across the country and are now ready to start with practical application of what they have learnt,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

Their duties will be the provision of municipal health services such as food control, water quality monitoring, waste management, health surveillance of premises, vector control, surveillance and prevention of communicable diseases, environmental pollution control, chemical safety, monitoring of informal settlements and health promotion and education.

'The City takes pride in the contribution towards job creation and in the professional development of these young people. Not only will they gain experience in their fields of study, but the practical work experience will open doors for them,' said Councillor Van der Ross.
